The game of Pool was unsurprisingly based on the game of Billiards, but what is more surprising is that Billiards was originally based on Croquet. The word "Pool" comes from the betting faternity where a Poolroom was a place where you went to bet on horses, the billiard tables were there to keep you amused between races.
